OUR MEMORY HAS AGAIN SHRUNK. NOTRE MÉMOIRE VIENT ENCORE DE RETRÉCIR

English version

The collective memory is made up of the recollections of a community or a people. It brings together the common experience of this people and keeps it in the present for future generations.

At all times and in all places, artists have always maintained the collective memory of peoples. Among the Fang, for example, the collective memory is maintained by the Mvett; and in West Africa, by the Griots.

In modern Gabon, Makaya-Ma-Mboumba aka Mackjoss, has been a strong pillar of the country's artistic construction and a huge contributor to the maintenance and preservation of our collective memory.

With his means and his talent, he has taken on, revisited, revalorized and transmitted in turn these legacies and values belonging to our past, to help us draw new horizons on the basis of our intercultural relations. Mackjoss has helped us collectively enter modernity by taking our traditions with us. He knew that valuing the traditional cultural heritage was essential to its preservation.

"If you want to know a people, you have to listen to their music" is a famous quote by the Philosopher Plato. It is obvious that tomorrow, those who would want to know the Gabonese people, where they come from, what they are and their sensibilities, will also have to listen to Mackaya-Ma-Mboumba.

May the ancestors give him a welcome in keeping with the compatriot he has been.
