THE GABONESE PEOPLE DISAPPROVE OF AUBAMEYANG THANKING ALI BONGO AND HIS WIFE. LES GABONAIS DÉSAPPROUVENT DES REMERCIEMENTS D’AUBAMEYANG À ALI BONGO ET SON ÉPOUSE

English version

In his short speech of thanks after receiving the distinction of best African footballer of the year, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang thanked Ali Bongo and his wife. If his right to do so is absolute and recognized; the Gabonese people right to point out to him this blunder, is also absolute and recognized. This blog is in the camp of those who think that these thanks were not needed.

At the Nzeng-Ayong stadium, during the concert organized to celebrate Pierre Emerick Aubameyang’s ballon d’or, the master of ceremony, the host Regis Massimba, shouted "Pierre Emerick Aubameyang oyé, PDG oyé!" This blog joins almost all thinking Gabonese who feel that making this association between the football honoree and the PDG, is a serious breach of decorum in these circumstances of national celebration.

Dear readers, we would first like to again reiterate our congratulations to Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, and reassure everyone that this post is not intended to judge or criticize him; but mainly to note the habit of the current regime, of exploiting individual efforts of Gabonese that are volunteers and hardworking, for propaganda purposes. We could not ignore these aspects surrounding the Pierre Emerick Aubameyang consecration because we are committed to discuss things in depth, even when this becomes uncomfortable.

Sports in general and football in particular, are activities belonging to mass culture. Football because of its popularity can therefore easily be used by a totalitarian regime to strengthen, among the people, its system of domination; in order to convince the people that they should reproduce the social and political structures put in place by the dictatorship so to perpetuate it. Because football in the daily lives of people, familiarizes them with their stars whom they usually revere boundlessly; by Pierre Emerick Aubameyang thanking Ali Bongo after receiving his ballon d’or, the regime hopes that this may have a propaganda effect among certain populations who would say, "if Pierre Emerick Aubameyang is grateful toward Ali Bongo and his wife, this means that they are decent etc." This is why, in democracies, top athletes, artists etc., refrain from thanking political leaders when they receive laurels; the risk of being used as propaganda tools is too great.

The political role of sport is a reality. When Regis Massimba associates Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and the PDG, this is not an accident; it is intended by the sponsors of the event: the Presidency of the Republic. The goal of the regime by these acts is to insinuate that Aubameyang owes his success in part to Ali Bongo.

Sport is a major social instrument. It is like a polymorphic device that mixes body and spirit, individuality and collectivity, seniority and innovation, tradition and modernity. Its dynamic side is a reality. Sport is a mirror of our societies; it crystallizes our tensions, it manifests our opinions, spreads our hopes and desires. Sport is competition, adversity, struggle, and self-improvement. Sport occupies a great social place either symbolically or institutionally. Symbolically: it is a heterogeneous set of elements such as identity affiliation (local, regional, international); institutionally: this relates to the positive value of sport (healthy factor, social cohesion etc.)

In this context, we must be conscious and vigilant of the political use of sport by Ali Bongo’s regime, as it seems wise to us not to condone this type of propaganda that is detrimental not only to athletes but also to all the Gabonese people.
