JEAN PINGS SUCCEED’S IN HAVING A POLITICAL OPERATION IN HAUT-OGOOUÉ; BUT… JEAN PING RÉUSSI UNE BELLE OPÉRATION POLITIQUE DANS LE HAUT-OGOOUÉ ; MAIS…

English Version

Everyone knows that in Gabon, to oppose the regime in power is not easy. But history shows that going to present oneself as a challenger to the established order in Haut-Ogooué, the province of origin of the Bongos, where people declared opponents are often portrayed as mortal enemies, takes temerity. Yet this is just what has successfully done this weekend, Jean Ping.

It is true that doubts persist on Jean Ping’s posture, in view of his past as hierarch of the Bongo regime. We would be hypocritical not to mention these doubts given the skepticism of many of our readers about the amount of credit to be granted to all the Gabonese political class. This skepticism has again been strengthened with the recent defection of Samuel Ngoua Ngou, who took refuge in the corridors of the Presidency of the Republic, denying on the way his past as an opponent of the regime. But he promised us in his recent explanatory communication, that he would come back in the opposition at the age of 70! Therefore, even if Jean Ping’s deep posture is known only by him and his entourage, we are judging him at the moment by the actions along the lines of what the majority of Gabonese wants, and if it is he who chooses to embody it, if he decides to put pressure on the regime to change the course of events in Gabon, so be it!

Skeptical or not, it is not about to indulge here in the cult of personality, that would be a mistake. We need only to look at the facts and identify what is going in the direction of strengthening and what is pure symbolism. By literally going into the lair of the regime, by going to trample its right foot as would have said Guy Nzouba-Ndama, by going to hold a meeting in the so called regime’s impregnable citadel, Jean Ping has scored a symbolic point in his claim to now belong to those who stand away from the regime and want something else. For us, this meeting in Franceville, which is only symbolic, has the merit of offering the people of this city, to the Gabonese citizens of the province of Haut-Ogooué, a message of inclusion within the ensemble of Gabonese who not identify with this power. One way to express to them that the rest of Gabon does not consider them only as eunuchs of the regime, but that their suffering and claims should be taken into account similarly to those of all citizens.

To oppose the regime in power in Haut-Ogooué is not obvious, if one judges by the election results attributed there to the Bongos and which are all that capped at the Stalinist heights of 95% of. Despite this, we all know that in Haut-Ogooué, everyone does not necessarily agree with the management of the State according to the Bongo’s oligarchy; and to these compatriots, it is mandatory to provide a platform, a way out, a means of expression for them to live fully their civic freedom. For this blog, this is where a meeting like Jean Ping’s in that province this weekend, is of importance. There is no question here of savior of Gabon, or political messiah having telephone conversations with God. It is for us, in these times of misery of the people, about recognizing all the efforts going in the direction of awakening minds and for people to take control of their future and by that, the future of the country.

But we must remain cautious because if in normal countries, the mobilization capacity of a politician is determined by the number of people they attract to their meetings, it would be unwise to judge the success of the Ping meeting in Franceville, as a translation to a plebiscite, as history shows us in Gabon that you may well be popular, your election results would nevertheless be predetermined. Therefore, even if Jean Ping continues to increase his political strength; even if all Gabonese citizens get behind him in 2016, what means does he have to avoid that the Constitutional Court validates again a nightmarish result for the Gabonese people? It is for this blog surprising to observe that a man like Jean Ping, with all his experience of elections in Africa and around the world, shows detachment and passivity in this chapter. How can he succeed in changing Gabon, how will he go about forcing change in Gabon if the electoral apparatus remains the same?

In this regard, we have not yet heard anything satisfying and are our hunger for it stays on! What is worrying and causes us to doubt the reported sincerity. If you are sincere, you should attack the electoral machine; if you're not, then keep quietly toiling in symbolism!
