English Version

Maybe, hanging out with dictators is the new celebrity fad. After the much publicized visit the former basketball star, Dennis Rodman paid to “his” friend Kim Jong Un in North Korea not too long ago, Richard Attias, the promoter of an event called the New York Forum Africa has announced on the web page of this event that Spike Lee would make an appearance at that even in Libreville the capital of Gabon in June 2013.

This bit of celebrity news may elicit a little smile and even to found charming to a degree, until you remember that Gabon is a quasi-monarchical dictatorship in which as recently as this past weekend, members of the civil society where incarcerated to have wanted to march against ritual crimes without Ali Bongo’s wife. Spike lee is far from the first celebrity to rub noses with a dictator, but as a credible African American who has taken important social stance in his country, his rubbing elbows with the likes of Ali Bongo is not going to look good in the eyes of history as it would seem that Spike Lee is totally insensitive to the plight of Africans in general and Gabonese citizens in particular. In this day and age, such blatant disregard for human right and compassion is not going to be forgivable.

A coalition of Gabonese civil society groups has started to send messages to prospective participants to this event at Ali Bongo’s glory. Below is the text of that message which is also being sent to the news media around the world. Spike Lee’s response will determine whether he is a man of judgment and moral clarity, or a man motivated by greed who is simply compelled to make an appearance for whoever is paying the bill, no matter how despicable that person may be?
