A HEALTHY THINNING IN THE GABONESE OPPOSITION. UNE SALUTAIRE ÉCLAIRCIE DANS L'OPPOSITION GABONAISE

Even though it is hard to summon up much enthusiasm for the Gabonese political class on both sides, from the power or the opposition, these days, a group of the opposition under the leadership of Jules Bourdes Ogouliguende has just cleverly avoided a trap that would have paralyzed the opposition for a long time and prevented it to mount a significant action against the Ali Bongo regime.

As you know, Louis Gaston Mayila has been doing everything in his power to splinter and weaken the opposition. After the formation of the UFC during a summit in Mouila, most observers of Gabon politics were saying that finally the opposition seemed to have understood the big picture and crafted a unified strategy that had a chance of succeeding. But then, Louis Gaston Mayila began to show his true colors and his real role within the coalition of the opposition called then UFC; he began to make outrageous statement in official media which gave him enormous access when it is a fact that the opposition is seldom seen or heard in these media. This behavior caused the rest of the UFC members to exclude him. Then he said that he was created a rival coalition of the opposition, also called UFC and his group was hastily approved by the Gabonese Ministry of the Interior, clearly indicating the collusion between Mayila's action and the regime.

With the looming possibility of a conflict between the two UFCs regarding the paternity of that label, which was without a shadow of a doubt Mayila's objective, the Gabonese public was left shaking its collective head and concluding with amazement that once again, it was being given a sorry political choice between a corrupt dysfunctional regime and a divided incoherent opposition. But the group of the opposition that is still following the initial charter drafter in Mouila, decided to short circuit Mayila's manipulation by giving it’s a different denomination, it became the UFA. Thus separating itself completely from Mayila who is now free to have his UFC all by himself, while the UFA can proceed with its own agenda without any link to Mayila.

Many partisans of change in Gabon welcome the formation of the UFA because they know that the only mission Mayila had received was to destroy the wonderful dawn of great hope and confidence that was rising from the decision by the opposition to speak the same language. To achieve this, he had to make the opposition appear like a bunch of rascals, rogues and freebooters by causing them to fight among themselves and be lost in political squabbles. All the while allowing Ali Bongo to have tranquility in power because an opposition busy fighting among itself cannot effectively challenge the regime. Indeed, how could an opposition busy fighting among itself, could mobilize a people wallowing in the dust of poverty, ignorance and servility to demand and succeed in changing the regime in Gabon? How can a discredited opposition mobilize a galaxy of dedicated leaders of very high caliber from all regions of the country and ask them to make personal sacrifice and work loyally to change the regime in Gabon?

The way Gabon is governed is an absolute scandal. This is the twenty first century, yet Gabon is run like a typical communist state of the past with all its attendant controls. In a democracy the possibility of a change of government is an accepted part of the system. But in Gabon the regime has built a system that ensures that there is little possibility of a change of government and that everything possible is done to ensure that the PDG and the Bongos rules Gabon forever. This is why Gabon needs a strong and credible opposition now. A weak opposition can never make a dent in the Bongo system especially as we all know that the PDG and the Bongos have the intention to maintain a system which makes certain that they win at every election. The opposition cannot rely on the regime to make the situation easier for a change of regime. The only way to do it is to make the opposition strong. Without a strong force the opposition cannot achieve anything for the people. If we want to be effective there is only one way and that is to build our forces. Let us hope that the UFA would help achieve this strong opposition.

Over the last two decades, several parties and leaders have taken turns occupying the opposition landscape. While several leaders have traded the position of leader of the opposition, none has managed to serve as a truly reputable and reliable opposition leader from the start to the end. Instead, within the opposition, parties have tended to rely on contentious rhetoric and obstructionist tactics against each others, rather than allowing for healthy strategy to unseat the Bongo family from the Gabonese political throne. Let us give the UFA a chance to be successful.

Même s'il est difficile de nos jours de susciter beaucoup d'enthousiasme pour la classe politique gabonaise de tous les bords, du pouvoir ou de l'opposition; un groupe d'opposition, sous la direction de Jules Bourdes Ogouliguende vient habilement d'éviter un piège qui aurait paralysé l'opposition pendant une longue période et l'aurait empêché de monter une action significative contre le régime d'Ali Bongo.

Comme vous le savez, Louis Gaston Mayila a fait tout en son pouvoir pour abîmer et affaiblir l'opposition. Après la formation de l'UFC lors d'un sommet à Mouila, la plupart des observateurs de la politique gabonaise se sont dit que, finalement, l'opposition semblait avoir compris les grands enjeux et élaboré une stratégie unifiée qui avait une chance de réussir. Peut de temps après, Louis Gaston Mayila a commencé à montrer ses vraies couleurs et son rôle réel au sein de la coalition de l'opposition appelée alors UFC. Il a commencé à faire des déclarations scandaleuses dans les médias officiels qui lui ont d'ailleurs donné accès libre sur leurs antennes, fait rare car l'opposition n'est ni vue ni entendue dans ces milieux. Ce comportement causa son exclusion de l'UFC. Puis il alla créer une coalition rivale de l'opposition, également appelée UFC et son groupe a été rapidement approuvé par le ministère gabonais de l'Intérieur, indiquant clairement la collusion entre l'action Mayila et le régime.

Avec la possibilité imminente d'un conflit entre les deux UFC concernant la paternité de cette étiquette, ce qui était sans l'ombre d'un doute l'objectif de Mayila, le public gabonais ne pouvait que secouer la tête et conclure avec désolation qu'une fois de plus, il avait à faire un choix politique entre un régime corrompu et dysfonctionnel et une opposition divisée et incohérente. Mais le groupe d'opposition qui suit toujours la charte initiale de Mouila, a décidé de court-circuiter la manipulation de Mayila en se donnant une dénomination différente, il est devenu l'UFA. Ainsi se séparant complètement de Mayila qui est maintenant libre d'avoir son UFC à lui tout seul, alors que l'UFA peut procéder avec son agenda, sans aucun lien avec Mayila.

De nombreux partisans du changement au Gabon accueillent avec satisfaction la formation de l'UFA parce qu'ils savent que la seule mission que Mayila a reçue était de détruire l'espoir et la confiance qui émanait de la décision de l'opposition de parler d'une seule voix. Pour y parvenir, il devait faire en sorte que l'opposition apparaisse comme une bande désordonnée, et dispersée; ses membres se battant entre eux et se perdant dans des querelles politiques inutiles. Tout en permettant à Ali Bongo d'avoir la quiétude; car une opposition occupée à des conflits internes ne peut pas contester efficacement le régime. En effet, comment une opposition occupée à se combattre entre elle, pourrait mobiliser un peuple souffrant de pauvreté, d'ignorance et de servilité et lui demander de réussir à changer le régime au Gabon? Comment une opposition discréditée pourrait mobiliser une pléiade de dirigeants dévoués de très haut calibre dans toutes les régions du pays et leur demander de faire des sacrifices personnels et de travailler loyalement à changer le régime au Gabon?

La façon dont le Gabon est gouverné est un véritable scandale. Nous sommes au vingt et unième siècle, mais le Gabon est géré comme un état communiste typique du passé avec tout ce qui en découle. Dans une démocratie, la possibilité d'un changement de gouvernement est acceptée comme faisant partie du système. Mais au Gabon, le régime a construit un système qui assure qu'il y ait peu de possibilité d'un changement de gouvernement et que tout soit mis en œuvre pour s'assurer que le PDG et les Bongos restent à la tête du Gabon éternellement. Voila pourquoi le Gabon a besoin d'une opposition forte et crédible, dès maintenant. Une faible opposition ne pourra jamais faire fléchir le système Bongo d'autant plus que nous savons tous que le PDG et les Bongos ont l'intention de maintenir un système qui leur permet de s'assurer qu'ils gagnent à chaque élection. L'opposition ne peut pas compter sur le régime pour créer des conditions favorables à un changement de régime. La seule façon de réussir est d'établir une forte opposition. Sans une forte opposition les aspirations des gabonais risquent de continuer à être ignorées. Si nous voulons être efficaces, il n'y a qu'une seule façon de faire; c'est d'unir nos forces. Espérons que l'UFA permettrait de construire cette forte opposition.

Au cours des deux dernières décennies, plusieurs partis et dirigeants ont tour à tour occupé le haut du pavé de l'opposition. Alors que plusieurs dirigeants se sont échangés le titre de chef de file de l'opposition, aucun n'a réussi à servir de chef d'une opposition véritablement digne de confiance et fiable de bout en bout. Au lieu de cela, dans l'opposition, les partis ont eu tendance à rivaliser de rhétorique controversée et tactiques d'obstruction des uns contre les autres, plutôt que de travailler à la stratégie du délogement de la famille Bongo du trône politique gabonais. Donnons à l'UFA la chance de réussir.
