As described in George Orwell's writings, an Orwellian society is one within which the concept of freedom cease to exist. People are controlled by those in power through a series of mechanisms that are justified by the regime utilization of the strategy of "doublespeak" to mislead the masses into accepting to give up their liberties and freedom, in the name of fictitious and non existing future benefits. Such a country can be found in Africa, it is Gabon.

Currently in Gabon, Ali Bongo is having Richard Attias, an international lobbyist, organize for him a shindig called New York Forum Africa. However, some freedom minded Gabonese individuals had the idea to organize a counter forum at a local high school, to remind the world of the plight of the Gabonese people. But this is not the message Ali Bongo wants the world to hear; not while he is hosting his extravaganza. So he sent his security forces prevent that counter forum from opening and arrested its leaders. Then the news came out in the international media that these activists had been arrested. Embarrassed, the regime released some of them and justified their arrest by saying that Marc Ona Essangui, one of the activists had been very belligerent, if not violent, towards the police. The official press release from the Gabonese Interior Ministry even said that Mr. Ona had attacked the police officers by throwing rocks at them and even injuring some. Dear readers, this is laughable because Mr Ona has been confined to a wheelchair since childhood and it is very unlikely that he would be a threat to a well armed squadron of Ali Bongo's security forces. Additionally, Mr Ona upon his release said that at no time was he ever belligerent toward the police.

The New-York Forum Africa is taking place as Gabon continues to experience a period of increasing economic and political uncertainty. Currently, the education system is experiencing a lot of trouble, more and more Gabonese families are living in poverty and many promises made by Ali Bongo have not been materialized. Frustration is certainly palpable among the population. Under these circumstances, Ali Bongo is trying to exert an absolute control over the people of Gabon, by directly managing the information available to the public within Gabon and also dampen any social reactions by preventing any gathering of people who may disagree with his regime. This strategy was quite visible at the University of Libreville where every time students have tried to hold a rally, Ali Bongo charged them with his security forces. But the real question is whether those people coming from democratic societies and participating in this shameful display of contempt for decency by Ali Bongo, care at all about the perception that they are cozying up to a dictator. Do they even perceive the irony of the fact that while they are sitting in air conditioned salons with Ali Bongo, somebody of zero merit, people fighting for freedom are being arrested less than 5 kilometers away? Are they not tired of sharing champagne, caviar, call girls and others vices with dictators and their offsprings? Wouldn't they even consider for a minute that the people of Gabon need help? That the people of Gabon are sick and tired of dictatorship? Would they insult our collective intelligence by arguing that Ali Bongo is a democratically elected president? Would they insult our collective intelligence by claiming that they do not know who he really is? Is money the only thing really important to them? Are they going to use the old tired argument of "realpolitik" to try to hide the fact that their presence at such a forum turns them into sycophants for a caricature like Ali Bongo? Is what really counts for them that ability of Ali Bongo to pick up the tab? Don't they care where that money comes from and how blood stained it is? Don't they look around Libreville and realize just how poor the people of Gabon are?

All the contradictions of an Orwellian state can be found in Gabon during this New-York Forum Africa. While Ali Bongo is violently repressing students and the free civil society, an infomercial report in the Financial Times is telling us this week that he is a reformer. While Ali Bongo and his family are doing everything they can to change Gabon from within in a way that would put them in control of the country and its resources in perpetuity, the international cognoscenti assembled by Richard Attias are cozying up to him because he has oil and can pick up the tap. The participants at this forum are clearly aware of the fact that the Gabonese people are living in a totalitarian society and are gradually finding themselves rebelling against the dehumanizing forces of an omnipotent, omniscient dictator. But we all know how this story ends, because history has proven that the natural conclusion of totalitarianism is the inevitable collapse of such systems.

Comme brossée dans les écrits de George Orwell, une société orwellienne est une au sein de laquelle la notion de liberté cesse d'exister. Les gens sont contrôlés par ceux au pouvoir grâce à une série de mécanismes justifiés par l'utilisation par le régime de la stratégie du "double langage" pour illusionner les masses et les amener à accepter de renoncer à leur liberté et souveraineté, au nom de futurs avantages sociaux fictifs et non existants. On peut trouver de tels pays en Afrique, le Gabon en est un.

Actuellement au Gabon, Richard Attias, un lobbyiste international, organise pour Ali Bongo, des réjouissances appelées New York Forum Africa. Cependant, certains individus ayant à l’esprit la liberté des gabonais, ont eu l'idée d'organiser un contre forum dans un collège local, pour rappeler au monde le sort du peuple gabonais. Mais ce n'est pas le message qu'Ali Bongo voudrait que le monde entende, surtout pas pendant qu'il est l'hôte de son extravagant forum. Alors, il a envoyé ses forces de sécurité empêcher l'ouverture de ce contre forum et arrêter ses organisateurs. Puis la nouvelle de ces arrestations est tombée et a été relayée dans les médias internationaux. Embarrassé, le régime a publié une justification de ces arrestations en disant que Marc Ona Essangui, un des activistes, ait été très agressif, sinon violent, envers la police. Le communiqué de presse officiel du Ministère de l'Intérieur gabonais a même dit que M. Ona avaient attaqué les policiers en leur jetant des pierres et même blessant quelques-uns. Chers lecteurs, c'est grotesque parce que M. Ona est dans un fauteuil roulant depuis son enfance et il est très improbable qu'il soit une menace pour un escadron bien armé des forces de sécurité d’Ali Bongo. En outre, M. Ona à sa libération, a dit n’avoir été à aucun moment belligérant envers la police.

Le New-York Forum Africa se déroule dans un Gabon continuant de connaître une période d'incertitude économique et politique croissante. Actuellement, le système éducatif connaît beaucoup de difficultés, de plus en plus les familles gabonaises vivent dans la pauvreté et de nombreuses promesses faites par Ali Bongo n'ont pas été concrétisées. La frustration est certainement palpable au sein de la population. Dans ces circonstances, Ali Bongo tente d'exercer un contrôle absolu sur le peuple, en gérant directement les informations accessibles au public gabonais et en essayant aussi d’atténuer les réactions sociales en empêchant tout rassemblement de personnes qui pourraient être en désaccord avec son régime. Cette stratégie a été bien visible à l'Université de Libreville où à chaque fois que les étudiants ont tenté d'organiser un rassemblement, Ali Bongo leur a envoyé ses forces de sécurité. Mais la vraie question est de savoir si ces invités venant de sociétés démocratiques et participant à cette honteuse manifestation de mépris pour la décence, organisée par Ali Bongo, se préoccupent de la perception qu'ils renvoient en s’acoquinant à un dictateur. Est-ce qu'ils perçoivent même l'ironie du fait qu’alors même qu’ils sont assis dans l'air climatisé des salons avec Ali Bongo, quelqu'un qui a zéro de mérite, des gens luttant pour la liberté sont arrêtés à moins de 5 kilomètres d’eux? Ne sont-ils pas fatigués de partager champagne, caviar, call-girls et autres vices avec des dictateurs et leurs progénitures? N'auraient-ils pas envisagé un seul instant que le peuple du Gabon ait besoin d'aide? Que le peuple du Gabon soit malade et fatigué de la dictature? Oseraient-ils insulter notre intelligence collective en faisant valoir qu’Ali Bongo soit un président démocratiquement élu? Oseraient-ils insulter notre intelligence collective en affirmant qu'ils ne savent pas qui il est vraiment? L'argent est-elle la seule chose vraiment importante pour eux? Vont-ils utiliser le vieil argument de la "realpolitik" pour essayer de cacher le fait que leur présence à un tel forum les transforme en collaborateurs d’une caricature comme Ali Bongo? Est-ce que ce qui compte vraiment pour eux est seulement la capacité d'Ali Bongo de payer la note? Ne se soucient-ils pas d’où vient cet argent et combien il est taché de sang? N'ont-ils pas regardé autour de Libreville et réalisé à quel point les gabonais étaient pauvres?

Toutes les contradictions d'un Etat orwellien peuvent être trouvées au Gabon, durant ce New-York Forum Africa. Alors qu’Ali Bongo réprime violemment les étudiants et la société civile libre, un publi-reportage dans le Financial Times nous dit cette semaine qu'il est réformateur. Alors qu’Ali Bongo et sa famille font tout leur possible pour changer irrémédiablement le Gabon en son sein d'une manière qui les mettrait aux commandes du pays et de ses ressources à perpétuité, les personnages internationaux réunis par Richard Attias s’acoquinent à eux parce qu'il y a le pétrole et de l’argent facile à se faire. Les participants de ce forum sont parfaitement conscients du fait que le peuple gabonais vive sous un régime totalitaire et doive progressivement se rebeller contre les forces déshumanisantes de l’omnipotent et omniscient dictateur. Mais nous savons tous comment cette affaire se termine, car l'histoire a prouvé que la conclusion naturelle du totalitarisme est l'effondrement inévitable de ce système.
